LICHT2

> 400 pitches benefit from LICHT2 class leading LED performance with advanced controls to schedule lights on/off and to set light levels for training/match to save electricity and reduce light pollution. That’s Bright!

LICHT2 LED luminaires are manufactured by Sports Technologies (ST) in Holland and incorporate their SPORTcontrol Cloud based lighting management system. LICHT2 has been designed from first principals specifically for sport applications, with a focus on engineering quality, a very long design life, install and maintenance simplicity and sustainability from cradle to grave.

The second generation LICHT2 is now a market leader in Holland and quickly being adopted as the LED technology of choice throughout Europe. Some key facts are:

Modular System – 1kW to 6kW lamps with a range of beam angles

Lightweight – plus low windage area reduces column and foundation loads

No Rust Aluminium – no powder or paint coating to flake off over time

Light per £ – best lumen/W output reduces electricity costs and reduce weights

Base Mount Driver – electronics installed inside the column base – simplifies maintenance and reduces column loads

Cloud Controls – on/off, dimming, 1/2 pitch, scheduler, maintenance alarms

  • Designed and manufactured in Holland with quality components
  • > 400 sports pitches now benefit from LICHT2, and growing
  • Sports include soccer, hockey, tennis (more than 200 courts), athletics, softball etc

The LICHT2 technology has probably the best combined power efficiency and uniformity achieved by using multiple adjustable LED modules, nominal 250W, with a range of beam angles.  A 1kW luminaire, comprising 4 modules, is less than 15kg weight on the lighting column top – the driver is separate and installed at the base – so any historical luminaire can be swapped out without increasing the dead and wind loads on the lighting column AND normally increasing the lighting levels on the playing surface.

The SPORTcontrol Cloud based management system provides many functions:

Dim – preset light levels for different sports

Train or Match – press for the correct light levels – saves electricity and night pollution

Pitch – third, half or full pitch lighting options

Control – phone App, PC or local switch

Energy – reports power usage per driver

Degradation – auto adjust power over time to offset light loss

Alarms – preventative maintenance check and alarm system

The system comes with a 5 year warranty as standard with options for a 10 year complete system warranty. Lights4Sport provides a full design, supply, install and support maintenance service. The SPORTcontrol system is free of charge for year one and then included in a low cost support package thereafter, but all clients quickly see the cost saving benefits and ease of use to control the lighting. However, the lighting system can still be operated manually on/off without further charge.

The system and production design focused on sustainable engineering with minimal plastic; class leading design life, minimal maintenance requirements and recycling for end of life materials – its been thought through from cradle to grave.

Project References

Some Dutch and UK example projects are presented below:

Stakes MUGA, Havant Borough Council
A small but interesting project where the client wanted to light a MUGA, but without an available power supply.
We installed solar panels on 8m high lighting columns with a small battery storage system.
A wireless control system links via a GSM device to the Cloud to provide full monitoring and control.
Tennis Zeewolde
4x1kW LICHT2 to replace 8.8kW of existing lights.
Now dimmed to only 710W to offer the exact same lighting level as the original.
Hence, 67% energy saving with a far superior light quality and lighting uniformity.
Hockey Zeewolde
The first ST project.
20 kW of luminaires achieved 250 to 300 lux across the pitch.
These the first-generation lamps have been improved with LICHT2 now 10% to 12% more light output for the same power.
Hadley Stadium, Birmingham
L4S retrofitted with LICHT2 luminaires for a combined soccer pitch and athletics track.
The existing mast locations were a challenge to achieve the optimum uniformity for the soccer pitch whilst meeting the environmental requirements of the local residential area.
Grimsby Town FC
In 2019, we completed a new lighting upgrade for the FA League 2 club.
The average lux is >800 to comply with Championship and Sky TV future requirements.
The works involved new lighting platforms each loaded with 20kW of luminaires installed on the existing 80 year old masts that were cut down to 25m height. Works were completed within 12 weeks of an order from start to finish.

Trojans Sports Club, Southampton
New LICHT2 lighting provides >400 lux of lighting with just 24kW of luminaires on the existing 15m high columns.
We have effectively almost doubled the light output for half the power of the original metal halide lamps.
Power savings have been substantial using the Phone App to set different light levels for soccer and hockey training.
